Assemble in the 1874 Station and gather ’round Surfboat #1046 and hear the story of the Mirlo Rescue. Hasten back to the day (August 16, 1918) when a German UBoat torpedoed a British Oil Tanker carrying a full cargo of Aviation Fuel about 7 miles off our coast. In writing the recommendation that the Surfmen of Chicamacomico, under the leadership of John Allan Midgett, Jr, be awarded the Gold Life saving Medal, the Superindentant described their actions as demonstrating “Dauntless Devotion to Duty”.
