Justin O’Neal of Rodanthe reads the actual log entry written by John Allen Midgett, Jr on Aug 16, 1918, which describes the rescue of 42 British Merchant Seamen from the oil tanker Mirlo which had been torpedoed off our coast by a German U-boat. Justin is a descendant of both “Capt Johnnie” and crew member Prochorus O’Neal who performed this gallant rescue. Justin and his family were participants in a commemoration ceremony held on Aug 16th of this year at Chicamacomico Life Saving Station.

Bette Gray of Waves reads a list of the crew members of Chicamacomico who participated in the rescue of 42 British Merchant Seamen from the oil tanker Mirlo which had been torpedoed by a German U-boat off our coast on Aug 16, 1918. Bette’s grandfather, Arthur Midgett, was one of the crews who performed this gallant rescue. Bette was one of the descendants of the Mirlo Rescue crew that participated in a commemoration ceremony held at the station on Aug 16th of this year.
